چکیده

Monitoring has become one of the key issues for the successful deployment of IP multicast in the Internet. During the last decade, several tools and systems have been developed to monitor several different characteristics of IP multicast. In this paper, we focus on one specific monitoring task: monitoring end-to-end multicast service availability in the inter-domain. This task is important to maintain service robustness between sources and receivers. Without this assurance, the multicast infrastructure may become disconnected and essentially unusable. In this paper, we first study existing multicast diagnostic tools (e.g. mping and mtrace) and present their shortcomings in verifying end-to-end multicast availability. Then, we propose new multicast diagnostic utilities (mcping and mcroute) that can be used to perform various monitoring and measurement functions including verification of end-to-end service availability. We present a sample case study demonstrating the utility of these primitives in detecting and classifying multicast reachability problems in the inter-domain. The proposed utilities introduce only a few modifications to the service architecture and, in exchange, provide the multicast community with effective means to monitor and measure multicast service characteristics. q 2005 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Application layer reachability monitoring for IP multicast

The successful deployment of multicast in the Internet requires the availability of good network management solutions. One of the first management tasks for multicast is to verify its availability in the network. This task is usually referred to as reachability monitoring. Reachability ensures that sources can reach all existing and potential group members. Reachability also implies that receiv...

Supporting multicast deployment efforts: a survey of tools for multicast monitoring

As the Internet is expected to better support multimedia applications, new services will need to be deployed. An example of one of these next-generation services is multicast communication , the one-to-many delivery of data. Over the last ten years, multicast research as well as deployment eeorts have both been major areas of interest. In order to bridge the gap between the initial deployment e...

Providing Scalable Many-to-One Feedback in Multicast Reachability Monitoring Systems

With the deployment of native multicast in commercial networks, multicast is getting closer to becoming a ubiquitous service in the Internet. The success of this deployment largely depends on the availability of good management tools and systems. In this paper, we focus on reachability monitoring as an important multicast management task. First, we provide a general architecture for multicast r...

Network-in Quality the E-Business

Recent advances in user access technology enables the delivery of Network multicast to residential users. In order for such a service to be successful, efficient management must be performed in order to cope with a large and dynamic quantity of users. In this paper we investigate a practical monitoring scheme based on statistical control of quality of for such a purpose. We address the issue of...
